My Conclusion towards the Roman Gladiator Punishment
I do not think the Gladiator was fair at all. Not even if you have murdered someone as the crime, they deserve to be locked up. I don't think anyone deserves this punishment at all. This punishment was vile, as when the Gladiators have earned freedom, they are going to continue having 'flashbacks' and being disturbed for the rest of their life, which might end up with suicide. No one deserves a death penalty.
It depended whether it was economical or not. Although family (if they had any) back at home would have one less head to feed, the government (or the Roman equivalent) paid for the event, only to get slightly more money from the public willing to pay for this entertainment.
The Gladiators were certainly popular. Watching the Gladiators were the equivalent of watching a football match now. Also, the Gladiators themselves were very popular. They were sexually entertained if they made it out alive, and they were applauded for doing it. This would make a peasant's life great; he would finally be popular for once.
I definitely agree that this is a good deterrent. This would put off anyone completely of going against the law. I, for one, if this was the punishment, would not steal or murder if this was the punishment.
This is not justice at all. This was a way of the government earning more money, not justice for the slaves.
Overall, I do not think the Gladiators were a good idea. Although it was an amazing deterrent, it was not justice or fair.
